In La Ciudad del Sol
The cops all carry flowers
They while away the hours
Listening to Nina Simone
The walls are alabaster
And broken yellow plaster
They ring with children’s laughter
As a distant church bell tolls
In La Ciudad Del Sol
The ground is never shaking
There's beauty for the taking
Always enough to go around
The ocean cleanses the shoreline
And disappears the ashes
The theatre searchlight flashes
In La Ciudad Del Sol
Oh city of the angels
Where the skies are always blue
Till the rain comes down pulls the green from the brown
In the sunsets vivid hue
The angels fly above us
And they wash us with their tears
They tell us not to fear
We will survive, me and you
In La Ciudad del Sol
Tender hearts are winning
A generous beginning
Has awakened in us all
The sisters and the brothers
Embracing earth, our Mother
Respecting one another
In La Ciudad del Sol
“La Ciudad del Sol”
“La Ciudad del Sol” (The City of the Sun) is a love song to the people of Los Angeles, written by Mike along with Rob Waller (of I See Hawks in L.A.). They imagine a city where “the cops all carry flowers”, “the sky is always blue," and “the ground is never shaking.” It's a land of “new beginnings”, where people are “respecting one another”.
This hopeful message is particularly poignant today as Los Angeles finds itself under siege from militarized forces grabbing residences from the streets and trying to destroy the beauty of a city built by many hands from people around the world. “La Ciudad del Sol" reminds us why Los Angeles remains a symbol of equality, opportunity, and peaceful coexistence. "{The angels} tell us not to fear, we will survive, me and you.”
“La Ciudad del Sol” is currently not available for streaming, but can be purchased at Bandcamp, with all proceeds benefiting Homeboy Industries, a beacon of hope and a vision of a better future for Los Angeles.
